Chris had a shutdown at work the week of President's Day so we did a staycation! (ya know did cool things around town without spending much money or renting a hotel room)
Monday First we had a visit from the Duncan's and Bill and Phyllis O'Neal. (We consider them family as Phyllis was best friends with my grandmother until she passed away last year and my dad grew up with all of Phyllis & Bill's kids and we do Christmas with them.) Anyway, we only live about a mile from The Duncan's now, so when Bill and Phyllis came up for a visit we got to see them too. All of the kids played Wii and had lots of fun. They figure out the games way faster than I did!! It was fun watching them and catching up with everyone.
Then Chris, Chloe Caleb and I went to BOLT the movie about a superhero dog. The kids had been wanting to see it for forever and we found it playing at one of the older theaters. They loved it. Now they want to watch it again--have to see if the library has it to rent.
Tuesday we went to Oaks Amusement Park for Rollerskating. It's a really neat deal. During the school year they do it 2 times a week for kids 6 and under. You only pay for the kids, adults are free. The kids get to do the skating at their own pace without a bunch of really fast kids going by them. They also did a little 5-10 minute lesson. They gathered all the kids up and had them do stretching. Then showed them how to use the stopper on their skates, get up off the ground when they fall, and bend down to do a "safety check" for their balance. Then at the end their is Chipper the chipmunk and all the kids get to hug him. Oh and they get a snack too. (During the summer they have the same type deal, but it is for the rides. This summer will be so fun. The kids loved it last summer but Caleb was a little on the small side.)
Wednesday was a rest day. Chloe had preschool and then they got to just relax and hang out with dad.
Thursday we went to OMSI. We checked out a bunch of the hands on exhibits first, then met up with Grandma Patti and Papa Mark to check out Da Vinci. It was a nice exhibit, but I think I want to go again and get a sitter for the kids. They had 3 or 4 hands on activities for the kids to do throughout the exhibit which they loved, and were lots of fun. However, the main attractions looked like they should be hands on so I didn't get much time to read anything about them. If I stopped to look one of the kids would run off or start trying to touch something with one of the signs with a hand and a big cross through it --no touching. Mark, Patti and Chris got to see most of the exhibit. I figured as long as most of us got to see it. While they finished up I took Chloe and Caleb to the play area. They love the sand area. Chloe doesn't wear skirts or dresses often, so she's not up on the correct way to be sitting when wearing a skirt and decided that sand angels were the best thing ever, while flashing her undies at everyone. She didn't get up until someone started getting sand in her eyes. She moved along to filling up buckets, climbing into buckets and playing with dinosaurs in the sand. Caleb likes the balls in the playarea. You stick them in tubes and they zoom through down and around and out. And of course air coming out at you when you try to put the ball into the tube. Lots of fun. Oh and another highlight of their day. Dinner at Red Robin. And the Robin was even there. They got a picture with it, and they got to share dessert with Chris.
Friday was school day for both of the kids. And I got to relax and read a book while they were both in class. As Chris would tell you-- I am addicted to the Janet Evanovich number books right now and sneak in reading whenever possible. I'm on number 12! (this is the most I've read since Harry Potter)
All in all a fun week, but busy. We're just glad we got to spend so much time with Chris. Maybe for his next shutdown it will be sunny and warm and we can hit the Zoo, or maybe even venture out to the coast.
